What to do first when someone passes away
You do not have to know what to do next.
Losing someone is overwhelming, and it is hard to know what to do first. If you only read one thing on this page, read this.
1
Make sure the death has been medically confirmed
A doctor, paramedic or ward nurse must confirm it. If the death was sudden or unexpected at home, dial 999.
2
Take a breath, and make du‘ā
Take a moment and make du’a. You do not need to work everything out right now. Call us and we will guide you through each step.
3
We will guide you through everything that follows — collection, Ghusl — ritual washing, Kafan — shrouding, Janazah — funeral prayer, the necessary documentation and burial.
Whatever your situation, your first and easiest step is to call us. We will calmly walk you through everything.
What to do when someone dies
Three situations, and what happens in each.
Whatever your situation, your first step is to call us. But if it helps to know what is coming, here it is.
Someone has died at home
Expected or sudden, the first call is a medical one — then ours.
Call the deceased’s GP if the death was expected: Contact the appropriate healthcare professional involved in their care. If the death was sudden or unexpected: Call 999. Once the death has been confirmed: Call us on 07943 119996.
A doctor or paramedic will confirm the death. In some cases it may be referred to the coroner, which is routine.
Contact us straight away on 07943 119996. We are available at all hours.
We will guide you through everything that follows, from collection to burial.
Someone has died in hospital
The ward begins the paperwork; we take over the moment they are released.
Speak with the ward staff and ask for the hospital bereavement office.
The hospital will prepare the medical paperwork. A medical examiner may review the cause of death before it can be registered.
Contact us. We liaise with the mortuary and arrange collection as soon as your loved one is released.
The death has been referred to the coroner
We will explain what happens next, liaise with the relevant office where appropriate and keep you updated throughout the process.
It usually happens when a death is sudden, or the cause is not immediately clear.
We liaise directly with the coroner’s office on your behalf.
We keep you updated at every stage, so you are never left wondering.
As soon as your loved one is released, we move quickly to complete the funeral.
